In Japan they have slippers not just for indoors
but for walking. Geta. Garden strolling.
Pom-pom blossom, silk rustling like the bamboo,
serene water, careful stepping, stone to stone
on the way to the endless world of borrowed scenery.
Tv advertises cloud-soft slippers that convert
to shoes with an easy whisk. Half-ways.
Rabbits out of hats. Elsewhere old men stare
puzzled outside mosques, try to remember
which worn black shoes are theirs.
I love how my slippers wait, I've no need
for fawning pets. Servant shoes partner up
while I'm out. Best are felt floppers,
my dead-of -night choice, repelling lino attacks,
and deep drain spiders. Woollen warriors.
